Work Placement at One BC - Part 1

An overview of my ongoing work placement at the Nottingham-based bespoke clothing label.

An Introduction

One BC is a bespoke label launched by Tony and Rita Brack that caters to a wide variety of audience. Quality, longevity, creativity and individuality define the handmade creations at One BC. The ReJeaneration Project has seen the development of stunning denim pieces, put together with consideration from unpicked parts of preowned denim garments. Tailored suits and alternative occasion wear also form the ethos of the brand.

The Experience

My time with One BC started in November 2022. The experience of being a part of the day-to-day at a British fashion label has been an exciting and eye-opening one. The work environment is relaxed, yet disciplined and social, yet professional. My first piece of work was the construction of an eight-paneled denim bowler hat as part of the Denim ReJeaneration project. This was followed by the construction of a pair of men's denim jeans supervised by Reeta. Currently, I am in the process of constructing a men's tailored jacket, supported by the detailed demos provided by both Reeta and Tony.

Visit to James Hare

I got the wonderful opportunity to be a part of a visit to James Hare, a fabric wholesaler outlet in Leeds. James Hare specializes in silks, including embroidered and textured silk, linen and cotton fabrics. The vast display of different rolls of fabrics in a multitude of composition, textures and colors was exceptionally impressive.

The Takeaway

The initial few weeks at One BC was a great learning experience in discipline, proper fabric laying, pressing and cutting techniques and basic fabric etiquette. I learned that every millimeter makes a difference with silhouette and fit when it comes to cutting patterns and sewing seams. My construction skills has seen a visible improvement since I began this work placement. The finishing of my garments are now cleaner and more precise, owing to the clean techniques and discipline I picked up from the extremely accomplished individuals at the studio. More importantly, I got to experience being a part of a positive and uplifting work environment, and the wonders of being surrounded by supportive and passionate human beings.
